We are a small family breeding program only producing around 2 litters per year. When you purchase an Atkinson Farm's puppy you are also purchasing a lifetime of support. Miniature Bernedoodles are our passion. They pair the loyalty of a Bernese Mountain dog with the intelligence and versatile size of the miniature poodle. Our goal with this pairing is to provide the best qualities of the two breeds and eliminate the purebred problems.
Mini Bernedoodles are bred in two ways. The first and most common is to breed a Bernese Mountain dog and Miniature Poodle. This pairing produces an F1 Mini Bernedoodle. The second method is to breed together two F1 mini Bernedoodles to produce F2 Mini Bernedoodles. Here at Atkinson farms we use the second method. This means we only produce multi-generational Bernedoodle puppies. F2 puppies vary more widely in coat type and pattern. Meaning we can provide an aesthetically diverse selection. From a straight coat with a more Bernese appearance to a curly coat with a more poodle appearance or the classic doodle coat which is often described as wavy. Doodles were originally produced in an effort to combine a poodles hypoallergenic coat with the temperament of a Golden Retriever. Our Miniature Bernedoodles are produced for many more reasons. Our main goal in mixing these two breeds is to bring the best of both together. Bernese Mountain dogs are beautiful, goofy, and incredibly loyal. But often experience large breed problems like a short lifespan and hip dysplasia. Miniature poodles are best known for their intelligence and long lifespan. But are also known for genetic conditions the most common of which causes blindness. By breeding these two breeds of dogs together we are not only bringing the best of both breeds together but breeding away from their problems to ensure a healthy and happy dog not just for puppyhood but for life. This is why here at Atkinson Farms we have our no line breeding guarantee and perform genetics testing, to ensure genetic diversity and eliminate genetic disorders.
Grooming is often spoken of as the most unexpected responsibility of doodle ownership. This is why its often the first item we talk about when describing the care requirements of our pups. Every dog requires grooming of some kind. From the double coated Siberian Husky which requires a bi-annual coat blowout and frequent brushing to avoid a fur blizzard in the home to the Boxer with its short hair and deceivingly thick coat which when shed embeds into upholstery and clothing resulting in an often stabby result.
Bernedoodles have requirements of their own. We produce three coat types curly, wavy, and straight. Of the three coat types we produce the curly coat type will require the most frequent brushing to avoid tangles. Both the curly and wavy coat types will require grooming either at home or a pet salon every 4-12 weeks depending on the coat length the owners prefer. The longer the coat the more frequent brushing will have to be to avoid matting. This is a crucial fact of any breed which has a perpetually growing coat.
